Black women are resilient, strong, and determined. This was proven in a recent interview with Jessica Jocelyn a successful black Speech Pathologist in Orlando, Florida. In this interview, Jessica describes her struggles in achieving success and how she never gave up along the way. Jessica Jocelyn graduated from the University of Florida and then shortly after that she went off to grad school at Valdosta State University. Now Jessica works for Orange County Public Schools as a Speech Pathologist and does private practice.

Jessica gives 4 tips on achieving success.

Be Determined

According to Jessica Jocelyn, “Don’t give up, No! Does not mean this is the final answer.”  For example, she explained that she applied to grad school at first and did not get in. Instead she worked a little harder and tried again and got accepted. Determination is the key to success. The greatest people in life have reached success by persistency. In order to reach a goal an individual must be willing to sacrifice, and keep their eyes on the prize.

Capitalize On Your Strength

”You need to capitalize on that strength. If your strong in something go for that”,said Jessica Jocelyn. Strength’s Quest by Donald O. Clifton & Edward Anderson helps an individual discover and develop their strengths. Society always magnifies people’s weaknesses and this new concepts pushes the notion that it is better to focus on a person’s strengths because it leads to success.

Surround Yourself With Motivated People

Jessica says, “Surround yourself with people who are driven. Don’t hang around people who are not speaking positivity in your life.” This supports what psychologist call external locus of control where they believe factors outside of them dictate the direction of their lives.

The lesson learned from Jessica and her interview is that success is achieved when an individual takes control of their lives by making the right decision. Decisions like not giving up, capitalize on an individual strengths and surrounding themselves with a good environment. Decisions are made by an individual and not by an external source. People have control over their decisions. Discipline is a huge component of success because an individual has to sacrifice wants for needs in order to succeed. Black women in America have been achieving success since Harriet Tubman and will continue to do so until the end of time.

Tip of the Day: Anything is possible when it comes to success.
