Black women use Code Switching as a way to advance themselves in the workplace. According to (Lewis, 2018), code switching is most commonly defined by linguists as “the alternation between two or more languages, dialects or language registers in the course of” a single conversation or exchange. Code switching is a way to relate to the environment that you are in. African-American women are held to higher standard than their counter parts therefore feeling the pressures of living up to a professional ideal set in place for them in American Society. Jessica Jocelyn a black women speech pathologist says, black women would like to be judged on their work performance rather than societal stereotypes.
In a recent interview, Lorie Coachman a manager at Valencia College explains code-switching.
Code switching is something taught to the black community at an early age. An article in the New York Times references the show insecure “we learn early and often that the way we are in spaces with other black people is not the way we should be in professional circles.” Black women are encouraged to read the article “How Black Women Are Finding Their Own Paths to Success in the Workplace.” In order to help everyone feel included companies are now encouraging more training on inclusion. To break down the stereotypes and to help encourage different groups of people it’s okay to be themselves. In the meantime, black women will continue to climb the ladder success despite the challenges they may face.
